The Secret and the Law of Attraction

The Secret is a 2006 film that includes interviews with professionals and authors in the fields of quantum physics, psychology, metaphysics, coaching, theology, philosophy, finance, feng shui, medicine, and personal development. These individuals assert that everything one wants or needs can be attained by believing in an outcome, repeatedly thinking about it, and maintaining positive emotional states to “attract” the desired outcome.

The tenet of the film and book is that the universe is governed by the Law of Attraction, a natural law that operates by attracting into a person’s life the people, situations, events and experiences that “match the frequency” of the person’s thoughts and feelings. The Secret thus postulates that thinking positive thoughts can cause life-changing results such as improved health, increased wealth, and happiness.

Rhonda Byrne, the creator of The Secret, has acknowledged that she drew much inspiration for The Secret from a book published in 1910 by Wallace D. Wattles called The Science of Getting Rich, which she received from her daughter in 2004 during a time of personal upheaval. She also read and synthesized the wisdom from several classic books and modern-day teachers.

After being featured in two episodes of The Oprah Winfrey Show, the book reached the top of the New York Times bestseller list, where it remained for 146 consecutive weeks. The book has been translated into 44 languages, and there are more than 21 million copies of the book in print. In addition, the book and film have grossed over $300 million in sales.

The Content of The Secret

The first part of the book includes an introduction and explanation of the mechanisms of the Law of Attraction. It also describes renowned men and women in history who are claimed to have harnessed its power. In the book, the Law of Attraction is described as a magnetic power emitted through one’s thoughts. The power of thoughts is likened to a transmission tower or broadcasting station that sends out a frequency to the universe. The universe in turn returns the same frequency in an elemental or physical form.

The book also refers to a three-step creative process for manifesting dreams: Ask (visualize in the film), Believe, and Receive. This creative process is based on a quote from the Bible: “And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.” (Matthew 21:22)

The Secret emphasizes that gratitude and visualization are the two most powerful processes to help manifest desires, based on the assertion that being grateful both lifts your thoughts to a higher frequency and affirms that you believe you will achieve your desire.

Here is a quote from Rhonda Byrne on the power of gratitude:

“Be grateful for what you have now. As you begin to think about all the things in your life you are grateful for, you will be amazed at the never ending thoughts that come back to you of more things to be grateful for. You have to make a start, and then the law of attraction will receive those grateful thoughts and give you more just like them.”

Visualization is said to help focus the mind to transmit the clearest message to the universe. The book provides several techniques to give guidance for the visualization process, as well as examples of people who have manifested their dreams through visualization.

More Quotes from Rhonda Byrne

Here is a quote from Rhonda Byrne on the power of visualization:

“When you close your eyes and you visualize having money and imagine doing all the things you want with that money, you are creating a new reality. Your subconscious mind and the law of attraction do not know whether you are imagining something or whether it is real. And so when you imagine, the law of attraction receives those thoughts and images as though you were actually living them, and it must return those visions to you.

“When you are in the place where what you are imagining feels real, you will know that it has penetrated your subconscious mind, and the law of attraction must deliver it.”

Subsequent chapters describe how to use the law of attraction to attract wealth, relationships, and health. The final chapters provide a more spiritual perspective of the Law of Attraction, and of how it relates to one’s life and the world.

Here’s one more quote from Rhonda Byrne on the power of your thoughts:

“Isn’t it great to know that you cannot control your world from the outside? To try and control things on the outside feels impossible because it would take so much work, and in fact it is impossible according to the law of attraction.

“To change your world all you have to do is manage your thoughts and feelings on the inside of you, and then your whole world changes.”

Thought alone will not cause manifestation. Nevertheless, just as a car will not arrive at its destination if it is steered in the wrong direction, so too if your thoughts are not in alignment with your desired outcomes, your actions will not produce your desired outcomes.
